The Occasions of Love

by Simon Fletcher

the occasions of love are few,
and should not be strained or studied;
rather they should be taken gently
and treasured, not mourned for.

This is the powerful theme of Simon Fletcher's collection of poems and Ted Hughes has written of it: I enjoyed the deft fluency, the economy, the pure tone, the pang - (as Frost, said no pang, no poem) The author was born on a smallhollding in the Wyre Forest, Worcestershire and now lives in Shropshire. His work as a journalist, specialising in country matters, has been published in Country Life and the Daily Telegraph. He is a literature development worker (part- time), writer and performer. A Wyre Forest Diary (1981) is an account of the natural year in his home area. The Occasions of Love celebrates all the experiences and emotions of love, discovery, pleasure, loss and isolation in a softly erotic, elegant, consistently witty and often ironic way.
